“Typography is the design and use of typefaces as a means of communication. It is considered to have begun with Gutenberg and the development of moveable type. But typography has its roots in handwritten letterforms. Typography encompasses everything from calligraphy through digital type and type on Web pages. It also includes type designers who create new letterforms as well as designers and calligraphers who use the letters as part of their designs. Typography uses typefaces and the whitespace around and through them to create a whole design.” (quoted from http://webdesign.about.com/od/fonts/qt/typography-basics.htm)
Below I have found an excellent infographic designed by David Thurgood briefly explaining the basic rules and structures of typography, as well as analysing the typography used in logos from local shops. (http://www.davidjthurgood.com/2012/01/infographic/)
Expanding on David’s infographic I have found an article on Designshack.net that I’ve found very interesting. It outlines eight basic rules of typography. http://designshack.net/articles/typography/8-rules-for-creating-effective-typography
I have also found a blog online called ‘I Love Typography’. This blog is dedicated to beautiful type. Apparently it is one of the best places to learn about typography online so I will definitely be following this blog. http://ilovetypography.com/
